Love at Second Sight

swings-many-swords:

Swings rose his eye ridges for a moment at the chill of the cold paint, but adjusted quickly and listened to what Dar-Mei was saying. “It’s amazing, truly. I did not think I would know happiness at one point, but…aah, I sound like a lovestruck fool, I am sorry, Miss…Dar. Dar.” He said her name again to show that he would make an effort to call her that.

Dar smiled at his effort and added a quick dab of paint to the now formed paint cuff. “Gods Swings, are you always going to be this enamoured by him?” She smiled and stuck her tongue out to show she was only teasing.

Stepping in front of him, watching for her other paint supplies strewn out on the ground, she made a ‘hmm’ to herself as she studied him over. “I’m thinking we go with stripes along your collarbone. ..Or is that too close to your neck?”

Love at Second Sight

swings-many-swords:

“No Miss Dar, I think it would be fine to begin now.” He tried to relax, letting his shoulders loosen and nodded. “Anytime you would like.”

Swings decided there was no point in being silent, so tried to make light hearted, silly conversation. “Have you ever been in love, Miss Dar Mei?” …Well..somewhat light hearted and silly. “It is most wonderful.”

Starting with the colour she’d shown him, she started on his upper arm, making what was to become a painted band. “In love? No.” She smiled to herself, it was obvious where his head was today. Not that she’d blame him.

Dar added a few more strokes to that arm, adding paint as needed before moving to work on the other. “I’ll take your word for it though. You two seem happy.” Happy and love drunk. “And Swings, for the millionth time, you can just call me Dar! You don’t have to be so formal.” She laughed. “We’re about to be family, honestly.”

He laughed. “Fire? I suppose so! Perhaps not the best move, then.” Swings looked at the colour on her fingers and nodded. “How lovely!” It was a gorgeous colour, and he showed his approval with a large smile.

The smile faltered for a second. “Could I ask to not be painted on the neck? Just a…personal preference.” He hoped she hadn’t noticed the scar.

“….” A momentary lapse in smile. “Sure, no problem.”

She looked between the two bowls of paint she’d already made and the remaining ones she’d set out. “You know, I think we can start with these two for now. It isn’t like making them takes long and I can whip up some new ones should we need it.” Not to mention, it’d give her something to do while they waited for the paints to dry.

Holding up a bowl of blue paint in one hand, she motioned for him to hold an arm out. “Unless you have anything else you want me to know, I think we can start now.”

Love at Second Sight

swings-many-swords:

“Good, because I must inform, there may be more…’cheesiness’.” He smiled at the oddity of the new word and watched her go about making the paints. The smell of them, as it began to rise, sparked faded memories in him that he couldn’t quite reach, so he tried to remain thinking in the present.

“So what colours did you decide on for me, Miss. Dar?”

“Mm..for you I picked blues and greens. I think they’d go better with your scales.” She nodded, picking up another bowl of ingredients and started on those. “If we went with anything brighter you’d look like you were on fire. ..It might have been a good look for spring, but it wouldn’t do for a wedding.”

Dar dipped two fingers into the freshly made paint and held them up so he could get a better look at the colour. “Something like this.”

Love at Second Sight

swings-many-swords:

“Ooh, no, it wouldn’t do, would it?” Swings nodded. “He must be kept in the dark, as must I to his paints.”

He took a brief moment of hesitation (changing in front of a lady seemed most inappropriate) and then took off his vest and shirt, carefully angling his arms so that the shirt didn’t catch on his horns. He sat down on a nearby rock, and spread his arms wide.

“I am your canvas, Miss. Dar. Do whatever you should like.”

Dar laughed and rolled her eyes at the gesture. “It’s your wedding day, so I’m going to let you slide on being cheesy.”

She walked over and kneeled next to where he was sitting, removing a handful of small bowls, ingredients and tools and setting them down in front of her. “Making the paints shouldn’t take too long, so we’ll be able to get this going fairly soon.” As if to punctuate her point she picked up a handful of brightly coloured seeds and went to work on them, adding water as needed.

Love at Second Sight

swings-many-swords:

“No, no. I have only been here a short while myself. Long enough to be giddy, but ah, when will I not be so today?” Swings smiled, looking in her bag. “My, what lovely colours! I am sure you will do a fine job, Miss. Dar.”

He stretched out his legs and arms and stood up. “So, how do you want me to sit? Shall we go anywhere?”

She laughed. “I should hope you’re excited on your wedding day! We’d have a problem if you weren’t.” She waved her hand, moving on. ”But it doesn’t matter where we go so long as J’Ram doesn’t show up. We don’t want him to see your paints early.”

With that Dar looked around for a bit, making sure she saw no signs of her brother since she hadn’t checked earlier. ”..I suppose here could work. Either way, you’re still going to need to take the vest and shirt off.”

Swings woke up smiling, as if his dreams had prepared him for today - because today, he knew, would be one of the best days of his life. He got up from J’Ram’s still sleeping form quietly, and headed out to where he had agreed to meet Dar-Mei, just where the trees began before camp. He wouldn’t see J’Ram again for a while, so he gave him a quiet tongue flick before leaving.

He sat on a small rock and quietly picked at grass. Today, he was to be wed to the best person he had ever known. His luck seemed phenomenal, and he grinned at no one in particular at how his life was turning out. Almost without meaning to, he thanked Talos and Mara and whoever was listening.

Dar came creeping up the path, holding a now ingredient-full bag shut. She’d originally just been invited, but volunteered to be their painter once she’d heard they hadn’t found one yet. Despite failing as an alchemist, she did know how her ingredients well enough to make paints.

Jogging closer she adjusted her bag, holding it up to show him what was inside. “Sorry I’m late! I found a few more things we can use. You haven’t been waiting for too long, have you?”

swings-many-swords:

“I’m glad too!” He smiled with a genuine happiness, one he’d only found when J’Ram had been his mate. His smile only grew when she welcomed him. “Thank you very much, Ma’am.”

Swings saw Falkreath coming up in the distance, close enough that he could see the facial features of the guards stood outside, and stopped walking. “Well, here we are. Unless you would like me to lead you into the town, will this suffice..?”

“What did I say about calling me ‘Ma’am’? Hmm?” She reminded before taking a step towards town.

Dar glanced back at the town, then back at Swings again. “No, I think I can manage from here. Even I can’t get lost in a town.” Well it hasn’t happened. ..Not yet at any rate, though there was always a first for everything.

She balanced on the balls of her feet, rocking a bit as if to make up her mind, before launching forward, quickly pulling Swings into a hug. “You’re probably tired of hearing it by now, but thanks for everything. And pleeaasse promise you’ll tell me when the wedding is, alright?”
